Title: Metal in the Air
Abstract: Airborne particles, historically seen as inert and uninteresting, are increasingly viewed as central to a host of Earth system processes. Trace metals (iron, copper, aluminum, zinc) within the particles appear to influence the supply of nutrients to the oceans, the toxicity of lakes to aquatic biota, and the acidity of rain. This talk will discuss trace metal chemical processes in the liquid layer on aerosol particles, and present recent results from the first computer model involving trace metal chemistry of the aerosol solid phase.
